CLIPPINGS - VERY SHORT ITEMS

What's the most humiliating scene you've ever had to play on a soap?

"When A.J. was in the Bahamas with Ned and Julia [Crystal Carson] in this rain storm, they made him bring in all of their luggage. He forgot one of the bags and they sent him back to get it. I just came in soaked like this wet water rat."

If you were invisible for 24 hours what would you do?

"If I were invisible for 24 hours, I'd slip into one of those high-level political meetings behind closed doors to find out how much they're not telling us 'for our best interest.'"

The Gossip, West Coast

Stars really do get the darndest things from fans. Sean Kanan (A.J., General Hospital) was actually presented with a dog at a personal appearance a couple of months back. "This fan, who's a breeder, had these two chow puppies with her," explains Sean. "She said, 'Would you like one?' I told her, 'Are you kidding? Sure!'"

Without further ado, Sean became the proud owner of "the most adorable dog I've ever seen. It's called a blue chow, although it's really black," he says. "I named him Max. I've always loved that name. It's kind of cool." Sean, who's had his share of dogs over the years, admits that for quite some time he'd wanted another one to come into his life. "Max came along at the right time," he says with a smile. "I'd just moved into a house with a yard, so it's perfect for him."

Hello, Again - B&B's Sean Kanan

"Deacon is a rattlesnake," Sean Kanan says with glee. "He's a pretty reprehensible individual. So far I haven't found any redeeming qualities in him at all."

The young soap vet (he played Jude Cavanaugh on Sunset Beach and A.J. on General Hospital was scheduled to do an independent film when he got the call to read for The Bold and the Beautiful's executive producer/head writer Bradley Bell, for the role of Deacon Sharpe. When he heard Bell's plans for the character, he canceled the movie gig and signed with B&B. "The movie would've been three weeks of work; this is a contract role for two years," Kanan explains. "I haven't played a character like this in a long time. I'm having a good time, so I made the righ choice."

Great Performances

Soap hopper Sean Kanan was merely so-so on General Hospital and Sunset Beach, but he's downright revelatory on The Bold and the Beautiful. As Deacon Sharpe, a white-trash opportunist with a lust for teen virgins, the formerly forgettable Kanan is steamy, scary, perversely funny and somehow oddly touching. This is a dangerous performance with a complexity we rarely see in soaps.
