HOT THIS WEEK - B&B'S SEAN KANAN |
ESOAPSTARS Online Magazine - November 20, 2000. |
When we first heard Sean Kanan [ex-A.J., GENERAL HOSPITAL] was going to the dark side and playing a bad guy on BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL [currently Deacon], we wondered out loud if we would like him portraying such an out and out creep. After all, A.J. was and is a very sympathetic character and when he played Jude on SUNSET BEACH ... well, he wasn't on long enough for us to get a real fix on the character. Even though Jude wasn't supposed to be a good guy, it was hard not to pull for him [we were actually hoping he would kill half the cast ... but we digress.] The fact that the handsome and studly Kanan looks like the poster boy for California Living, doesn't help. Someone that blonde, typically, personifies nice guy and goody-two-shoes. How wise of the actor and the show, then, to literally darken Kanan up ... Deacon is no yo-yo character thus far. He is all creep, all the time. And frankly, the sunny and happy-go-lucky folks of B&B needed a little creeping up. Not since blonder-than-blonde Jameson Parker played a young skeevy on ONE LIFE TO LIVE has daytime so enjoyed such a worthwhile bad boy with blonde streaks. His already powerful presence among an interesting canvas of actors is why Sean Kanan is Hot Today. He came to B&B with a clear-cut agenda. Make everyone around him miserable. And if he could use his little son Eric as a pawn in the process, so be it. We're still not entirely sure why or how this relatively sophisticated guy hooked up with Becky, who was something of an Oakie, as she was introduced. No matter. The fact remains that Kanan is proving his mettle as an actor and, yes, if there were any doubters, he can play creepy with the best. [So sue us, we forgot what a rat-bastid he was in KARATE KID III.] Thus far, Kanan has shown to be especially obnoxious in scenes with Justin Torkildsen [Rick] and Mick Cain [C.J.] After Becky died [we still think the show made a mistake letting the actress and the character go] we assumed that the saga of Baby Eric would turn into the standard and typical baby custody story. Already, the addition of Sean Kanan, a twist to the story no one could have predicted, has added a new and nice wrinkle to an already compelling story. It's good to have the popular Sean Kanan back on a show that is in no danger of being cancelled any time soon. We don't know how long Duncan is slated to stick around for [something this creepy either gets redeemed quickly or sent to the Happy Hunting Ground before too long] but for now we'll just enjoy his work and watching Deacon make everyone squirm. For his ability to go from hero, to anti-hero, to villain on a dime, and for being an underrated actor who oozes charm and sex appeal [and the dimples don't hurt], Sean Kanan is Hot Today and to that we say Bravo, Sean. [Editor-in-Chief's Note - And a belated Happy Birthday!]
