GH'S SEAN KANAN: FIRST THINGS FIRST

Soap Opera Magazine, July 26, 1994.

by Rosemary Rossi.

When Sean Kanan remembers his first apartment, ratty as it was, it's with pleasure: It was all his. And on whom did he have his first big crush? Well, it wasn't the girl next door, and he still hasn't forgotten her name. Nor has that first big thrill in his mastery of karate disappeared from his memory bank ... in fact, as you'll see, Sean seems to maintain an upbeat attitude about life in general.

First Memory of Childhood:
"Before my parents had my sister, we lived in an apartment in Cleveland. I remember them teaching me to swim in this huge swimming pool, which, in retrospect, was probably really small. Even at age 2 and 3, they had me learning to swim. Isn't that weird?"

First Best Friends:
"Randy Worthy and Andy White were my best friends. We all lived within a couple of houses of each other. When we were about 5 years old, we got lost in the woods behind my house. The first couple of hours it was a great adventure. Then it started getting dark and scary. It was like something out of Stand By Me."

First Day Of School:
"I remember thinking it was really cool that we got hot lunches and got to eat with the other kids. I liked it. I had a lot of fun. For me, it was like a big recess. I remember nap time, too. We napped on little rugs that we grabbed from a stack. That kind of bummed me out, because I liked to play."

First Odd Job Ever Done To Earn Money:
"I think the first thing every kid does to earn money is rake leaves and shovel snow. I bought my first baseball cards with the money, and I still collect them. And I'm an alumni of Golden Arches - I worked at McDonalds and decided it was not for me. I was much better at eating food than serving it."

First Ambition:
"To become a doctor. I had an uncle who was a big influence when I was growing up and I wanted to be a surgeon like he was. My grandfather was a doctor, too. When I was a little kid, he sent me a package of tongue depressors, surgical masks, all sorts of stuff that I had a great time playing with."

First Karate Thrill:
"I broke a cinder block. I didn't break it quite right, so I hurt my hand. But because I did break it, even though my hand was black and blue, the feeling of accomplishment was great. It is really good technique and focus, and a lot of it is believing that you can do it."

First Times Doing Standup Comedy:
"It went fairly well. I was 15 and the club was in Fort Lauderdale. When I was 16, I did it on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. It was a rush. I loved being the center of attention. I had all these adults around watching me, and it was exciting. I do a lot of impersonations. Sean Connery, Marlon Brando, Don Knotts - I can do pretty much anyone you name."

First Wheels:
"A station wagon that had this barn-siding stuff all over it. I think subconsciously I wrecked it on purpose. I hated it. My mother wasn't too upset because she got a nicer car. But I wasn't allowed to drive it."

First Pets:
"The first was a cockapoo named Scamp; he got hit by a car. Another, a brown chow named Mischa, was a real pain. I got him when I got Karate Kid III, which was brilliant on my part. I lived in a one-bedroom apartment and worked 18 hours a day. I left the dog alone in the apartment and he completely trashed it."

First Crush:
"My third-grade teacher, Miss DeCarlo. She had a great body. She had smoldering eyes. She was pretty hot, now that I think about it. I loved her from afar."

First Time He Wanted To Act:
"I started doing plays when I was a little kid. I remember thinking, 'This is fun. I think I can be pretty good at it.' There's a photo of me playing Mercutio, Romeo's hot-blooded friend in Romeo and Juliet. That was in fifth or sixth grade. It was an incredible feeling. It was an awakening."

First On-His-Own Apartment:
"A one-room dump in a rat-trap building...but it was all mine. It was minimalistically decorated. I was a minimalist because I couldn't afford furniture. There was a bed, a couch, a TV - and that's about it."

First Big Fad:
"When I was in junior high, we all wore pointy shoes and these atrocious fedora hats, and we thought we were really, really stylin'. The whole Miami Vice look: silk suits and T-shirts. I bought into that hard."

First Day At GH:
"I was so nervous. I wanted so badly to do well. But it was exciting and new. I was very happy and proud to be a part of such a great cast. Stuart Damon (ALAN) called the night before and left a nice message about how glad he was that I was joining the cast. So I felt immediately that I was working with someone I had some connection with. And Steve Burton (JASON) was in my first scene. Playing brothers with Steve comes pretty easily."
